Zoo Boo Volunteer Info
|October 13-15, 20-22, and 27-31, 2017 - Volunteer hours: 5:00 pm - 10:00 pm nightly
Admissions Gate Open to Guests: 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm nightly
We're calling all friendly ghosts and frightening ghouls willing to give of their time to support this fun Halloween event. Approximately 150 volunteers flock to the Montgomery Zoo each night of ZooBoo to man the children's games, sell game tickets, help with rides, and most importantly dress in costume and frighten guests on the Haunted Hayride! Volunteer as an individual or as a part of a school, civic, or corporate group and earn service hours while supporting the community and having a great time. Opportunities are available to serve one or multiple nights. With your help, we can make ZooBoo 2017 the best yet!
What Is the Minimum Age to Volunteer?
Volunteers must be at least 12 years old in order to volunteer at the Montgomery Zoo. Volunteers ages 12-16 must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian or a designated school chaperone. Volunteers ages 17-18 are eligible to serve on their own with parental consent. There are no restrictions for volunteers ages 19 and up. See below for more information regarding requirements for volunteers ages 12-18.
What Will I Be Doing?
The majority of volunteers will be helping frighten guests along our Haunted Hayride. You will be assigned to a specific scene and provided with a costume and make-up. Each scene requires anywhere from 4-10 volunteers so there are opportunities to play a role in a scene with other members of your group. A smaller number of volunteers is needed to help with children's games and assisting with taking tickets for the hayrides.
How Many Hours Will I Serve?
Volunteers are expected to commit to serving from 5:00pm-9:30/10:00pm on the night(s) that they sign-up to volunteer. We rely heavily on our volunteers to make this event successful and it is very important that you not leave your post before the event has closed for the night. While the admission gate closes at 9:00pm to new guests, ZooBoo will remain open until guests already in the park have had the opportunity to ride the Haunted Hayride or Pumpkin Pull and use their game tickets. The ending time varies slightly each night, but is typically sometime between 9:30 and 10:00 pm. Please Note: Volunteers who leave early will not be eligible to receive Service Hour Letters documenting their time for school, civic, or corporate requirements.
Are There Perks to Volunteering?
Volunteering during ZooBoo is a fun and rewarding experience. You will enjoy seeing guests have a great time as they play games, ride the Pumpkin Pull with their children, and experience a good scare on the Haunted Hayride. In addition to the fun experience, volunteers are also provided with a small meal prior to the start of the event as well as snacks and beverages during the event. Any volunteer who serves for three (3) or more nights of ZooBoo is eligible to receive two (2) free tickets to their choice of either ZooBoo, Christmas Lights Festival, or Regular Daytime Zoo Admission.
How Do I Sign Up?
Those who are interested in volunteering should complete the ZooBoo Volunteer Interest Form and indicate the night(s) they wish to serve. Hold Harmless and Photo Release forms are required of each volunteer prior to beginning their volunteer experience. These forms must be renewed annually for veteran volunteers. Those interested in bringing a group of volunteers to serve during ZooBoo are encouraged to also contact the volunteer coordinator directly. There is no deadline to sign up. We accept volunteers until we fill all slots for each night.
Volunteer Age Restrictions
Volunteers ages 12-16 must have a parent/legal guardian or designated school chaperone accompany them while volunteering. While we do ask that parents/chaperones help out and volunteer as well, they are not required to do so. However, they must remain in the vicinity of their child/student. Children under the age of 12 will not be permitted through the volunteer entrance with any parent, volunteer, or chaperone. Please plan to have one chaperone per 15 students under the age of 17.
Volunteers ages 12-18 must have parent/legal guardian permission in order to volunteer at the Montgomery Zoo. The parent/guardian is required to sign their child's Hold Harmless and Photo Release agreements. The forms MUST be signed in the presence of a Zoo staff member -OR- the parent/guardian must include a copy of their photo ID with the forms (license # and address or other contact info can be marked out). Any volunteer without the appropriate signatures and documents will be turned away.
If you are ready to get involved, please complete the ZooBoo Volunteer Interest Form. Those interested in scheduling a group volunteer experience are encouraged to contact the volunteer coordinator directly.
