Docent Program

Docents are one of the most important necessities in the zoo education department. Education Docents are trained volunteers that feed and care for the animals used by the education department. These animals may include birds, reptiles and other animals. They also participate in animal presentations and other areas of public interaction. Docents must undergo various levels of training to be qualified to present animals to the public. Docents can often be found walking the zoo with an unusual animal on their arm. This allows the public an up close and more in-depth view of the animal. This contact generates interest and amazement, enveloping the zoo guest into the experience. Docents are given the opportunity to react one on one with animals, and in turn, they present this opportunity to the general public.
